Packing a picnic is one of the easiest ways to save money on family days out without taking away from the fun. Whether we’re heading to a theme park, a country park, the beach or simply spending the day outdoors, taking our own food means we can spend more on making memories together.
As a family of five, we’ve found that a little planning goes a long way. It keeps everyone happy, gives us plenty of choice throughout the day and helps avoid spending a fortune on food.
Here are some of our favourite picnic ideas that are easy to prepare, travel well and are perfect for family adventures.
Sandwiches and Wraps
Sandwiches are always a picnic favourite. Some of our go-to fillings include:
- Ham and cheese
- Egg mayonnaise
- Tuna mayonnaise
- Chicken salad
- Cheese and pickle
- Jam for younger children
Wraps are another great option because they’re less messy and easy for little hands to hold.
Pasta Salad
A simple pasta salad is filling and can easily be made the night before.
Try adding:
- Chicken
- Sweetcorn
- Cucumber
- Peppers
- Cheese
- Light mayonnaise
Sausage Rolls and Scotch Eggs
Perfect for grabbing on the go and always popular with children.
Fruit
Fresh fruit is ideal for warm days.
Our favourites include:
- Grapes
- Strawberries
- Apple slices
- Blueberries
- Banana
- Watermelon
Vegetables and Dips
Adding vegetables is an easy way to keep everyone happy.
We often pack:
- Cucumber sticks
- Carrot sticks
- Peppers
- Cherry tomatoes
With hummus or a yoghurt dip.
Cheese and Crackers
Easy to pack and great for everyone to share.
Homemade Flapjacks
These are brilliant for days out because they travel well and provide plenty of energy.
Yoghurts
If you have a cool bag, yoghurts are perfect for little ones.
Crisps and Snacks
Everything in moderation!
A few packets of crisps or popcorn can make a picnic feel like a treat.
Drinks
Don’t forget plenty of water.
We also freeze bottles of squash the night before so they help keep the cool bag cold and gradually thaw throughout the day.

Why We Love Taking Picnics
Having Merlin Annual Passes means we enjoy lots of family days out throughout the year, and taking a picnic allows us to make those trips much more affordable.
Rather than spending a large amount on food while we’re out, we’d much rather put those savings towards our next family adventure.
Picnics have become part of our family routine and are often just as memorable as the attractions themselves.
Final Thoughts
Family days out don’t have to be expensive to be special.
A simple picnic, plenty of fresh air and spending time together are often the moments our children remember most.
Whether you’re heading to a theme park, the beach, a local park or a family attraction, packing your own picnic is one of the easiest ways to save money while still having an amazing day.
